CS2 vs CS:GO Skins: What Changed

When Counter-Strike 2 replaced CS:GO in 2023, players kept their entire inventories, but the move to a new engine changed how some skins look. This guide explains what carried over, what stayed exactly the same, and what visibly changed, so you know what you are actually buying today.

The transition

CS2 launched in late 2023 on Valve's Source 2 engine, replacing CS:GO as the single live game. Inventories migrated automatically, so skins, knives, gloves, stickers, and cases that players owned in CS:GO became CS2 items without any action needed. There was no separate purchase or conversion step.

Visual changes

Source 2 brought new lighting, materials, and rendering, and as a result some finishes look noticeably different in CS2 than they did in CS:GO. Colours can appear richer or flatter depending on the skin, and reflective or metallic finishes in particular were affected. The artwork itself is unchanged; it is the way the engine displays it that shifted.

What stayed the same

The core attributes carried over intact. A skin's float and wear value did not change, its rarity tier and name are the same, and qualities like StatTrak and Souvenir still apply exactly as before. Pattern seeds also persisted, so a notable pattern remains notable.

Legacy CS:GO items

Items that existed in the CS:GO era now simply exist in CS2. Older cases remain in inventories and can still be opened, and discontinued collections keep their scarcity. Nothing was deleted in the switch, which is why the market history of an item still reads as one continuous timeline.

Buying today

In practice there is no longer a "CS:GO skin" versus "CS2 skin" decision to make; every tradeable finish is a CS2 item now. The main thing to check before buying is how a skin looks in the current engine, since a finish you remember from years ago may render a little differently. Frequently Asked Questions

Did my CS:GO skins transfer to CS2?

Yes. Inventories migrated automatically when CS2 launched, so all owned skins, cases, and stickers became CS2 items.

Did float and wear values change?

No. Float values carried over unchanged, so a skin's condition is the same as it was in CS:GO.

Do skins look different in CS2?

Some do. The Source 2 engine changed lighting and rendering, which altered how certain finishes appear, though the underlying artwork is the same.

Is CS:GO still playable separately?

No. CS2 replaced CS:GO as the single live game, so there is one game and one shared inventory now.

Can I still open old CS:GO cases?

Yes. Older cases remain in inventories and can be opened in CS2, subject to the usual key requirement.
