CS2 Skin Rarity Tiers Explained
Every CS2 skin belongs to a rarity tier, shown by a colour, and that tier tells you how likely the skin is to drop and roughly where it sits in the hierarchy. Rarity is only part of what sets a price, but it is the first label most buyers learn to read. This guide walks through the tiers from common to exceedingly rare.
The colour tiers
Weapon skins run through a colour-coded ladder:
- Consumer Grade (white)
- Industrial Grade (light blue)
- Mil-Spec (blue)
- Restricted (purple)
- Classified (pink)
- Covert (red)
Above these sit the Exceedingly Rare special items, shown in gold, which cover knives and gloves. Contraband (orange) is a unique status applied to a discontinued item rather than a normal drop tier.
How rarity affects drops
Inside a case, the odds fall sharply as you climb the tiers. The lowest grade present makes up most openings, and each step up is progressively less likely, with the gold special items at a fraction of a percent. This structure is central to case opening and the maths behind it.
Rarity is not the whole story
A higher tier does not automatically mean a higher price. A Covert skin in a battered condition can sell for less than a pristine lower-tier favourite, and float and wear plus pattern all feed into value. Demand for the specific look matters as much as the colour.
Quality tags on top of rarity
Separate from rarity, a skin can carry a quality tag: Normal, StatTrak, or Souvenir. These sit alongside the tier rather than replacing it, so you might see a Classified StatTrak or a Covert Souvenir. Our guides on StatTrak and Souvenir versus normal explain the difference.
What it means for buyers
Use rarity as a quick orientation, then look at condition, pattern, and quality before deciding what something is worth. Browse the catalog to see how tiers map onto real listings across different weapons.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the rarest tier?
For weapon finishes it is Covert (red). Above that sit the Exceedingly Rare gold special items, namely knives and gloves.
Is Contraband a normal rarity tier?
Not quite. Contraband (orange) is a status given to a discontinued item rather than a standard drop grade.
Does a higher rarity always mean a higher price?
No. Wear, pattern, quality, and demand all affect price, so a lower-tier skin in great condition can outvalue a worn higher-tier one.
What colour is Covert?
Covert skins are shown in red, the top colour tier for standard weapon finishes.
Are knives and gloves a rarity tier?
Yes. They fall under the Exceedingly Rare special item tier, shown in gold.
