Avoiding Trade Holds and Delays

A trade hold is Steam's way of protecting items when an account looks newly secured or recently changed. For most traders it is a minor nuisance, but it can delay a time-sensitive sale or purchase by days. This guide explains what triggers holds, how the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator removes most of them, and how to plan around the delays that remain. For the security side, pair it with our Steam Guard and 2FA guide.

What a trade hold is

A trade hold places incoming or outgoing items in a pending state for a set period before they fully transfer. Valve uses it to give the rightful owner a window to cancel if an account was compromised. During a hold the item is effectively frozen.

Market sales can be affected too, with proceeds or listings delayed under the same protections.

The mobile authenticator removes most holds

The single most effective step is enabling the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator and keeping it active. Once it has been in place long enough, trades between users who both meet the requirement can complete without the long hold.

Without it, Steam applies a hold of up to fifteen days on trades, which is the most common reason beginners see delays.

Cooldowns from account changes

Even with the authenticator, certain actions trigger a temporary cooldown: changing your password, removing and re-adding the authenticator, or signing in from a new device. These can lock trading for several days.

If you know a big trade is coming, avoid making security changes in the days beforehand.

Planning around delays

Set up the authenticator well ahead of any trade you care about rather than the day of. If you are mid-cooldown, there is no way to skip it, so build the wait into your timing.

When buying or selling through a marketplace, check its help pages for how holds interact with its payouts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a Steam trade hold?

Trades without the mobile authenticator active can be held for up to fifteen days. With the authenticator properly in place, eligible trades complete without that long delay.

How do I avoid trade holds entirely?

Enable the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator and keep it active, and avoid recent password changes or new-device logins before trading. Holds mostly disappear once those conditions are met.

Why is my trade on hold even with the authenticator?

A recent account change, such as a password reset or re-adding the authenticator, triggers a temporary cooldown. It clears on its own after the set period.

Can I pay to remove a trade hold?

No. Holds and cooldowns are security features with no paid bypass. Anyone claiming to lift them for a fee is attempting a scam.

Do trade holds affect Steam Market sales?

They can delay listings or proceeds under the same protections. Keeping the authenticator active is the best way to keep market activity smooth.
