How CS2 Trading Works
CS2 skins move between players through Steam's trading system, either directly with another person or through marketplaces. Trading is straightforward once you understand trade offers, trade holds, and the safeguards that protect your items. This guide covers the essentials for a first trade.
Steam trading basics
A trade is completed through a Steam trade offer, where both sides see exactly which items are being exchanged before confirming. You can send an offer directly or share your trade link, a unique URL that lets another person send you an offer. Linking the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator to your account is strongly recommended before you trade.
Trade holds and cooldowns
Without the mobile authenticator active for long enough, trades are subject to a hold of up to fifteen days before items arrive, a measure designed to protect against account theft. Separately, items have a trade lock for a period after certain actions such as a Market purchase. Our guide to avoiding trade holds explains how to minimise delays.
Marketplaces versus direct trades
You can trade person-to-person, or use a marketplace that handles the exchange and payment for you. The official Steam Community Market keeps funds inside your Steam Wallet, while third-party venues can offer cash payouts. Compare the options in Steam Market versus third-party markets and our marketplace overview.
Staying safe
Most trading problems come from scams rather than the system itself. Always confirm item names and conditions in the offer window, never trade based on a promise of payment "after," and be wary of fake middlemen. Our scam-avoidance guide covers the common tricks.
Getting started
Before your first trade, secure your account by setting up Steam Guard and two-factor authentication. A protected account trades faster and is far harder to compromise, which is the foundation everything else rests on.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a trade hold?
A delay of up to fifteen days before traded items arrive, applied when the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator has not been active long enough. It protects against theft.
How do I reduce or remove trade holds?
Set up and keep the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator active. After the required period, eligible trades complete without the long hold.
What is a trade link?
A unique URL tied to your account that lets another player send you a trade offer directly.
Can I trade without Steam Guard?
Trading is heavily restricted or blocked without Steam Guard, and any trades face long holds. Enabling it is effectively required for normal trading.
Is trading through third-party sites safe?
It can be with reputable venues, but it carries more risk than the Steam Market. Verify the platform and follow basic scam precautions.
